Dan I Cook Hidden Treasures:  The Egg Roll at Wong’s Chinese Take Out.

I’ve been eating egg rolls since I was a little boy. The first egg roll I had was at the Mai-Kai Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl….pieces of pork and water chestnuts with cabbage all deep fried is a thing of glory.

Wong’s Chinese Take Out happens to be located in the “Epcot World Showcase” in Coral Springs, Fl. I say that because you have some of the best ethnic food located in the strip center where Wong’s sits. You have Aruns Indian Kitchen, Hamachi Sushi Thai, Chimi and Kimchi, and Melting Pot. Probably the best 1 block stretch of cuisine in South Florida.

The Egg Roll

No one ever told me about Wong’s. I just decided to get an egg roll one day to go with some Thai food I got at Hamachi. I walk in and order. The place is run by a family…the mom and daughter usually work the front (I can’t see who works the back). I will say this…the daughter is a Junior at FAU …Owls Up! and she works her ass off. She is almost always there when I go. Kudos to her for helping her mom out while I’m sure her friends are out having fun. I definitely respect this young woman.

I get my $1.75  egg roll and leave. I didn’t look at it until I got home. When I open the bag I was like holy shit! This egg roll is huge. By far this is the biggest and thickest egg roll I have ever seen. It’s like a little fried chimichanga. Besides the size, what really sets this apart is how crispy and crunchy this thing is. It seems like it’s doubled fried or they are using cornstarch and dipping these bad boys in egg whites then frying it. I asked how they do it and they wouldn’t tell me. When you bite into it…just pure egg roll heaven! Everything is piping hot and fresh. I always bite the top off and then add real Chinese mustard (not the crap that comes in the plastic pouches). This mustard is the only one that creeps into my nose and makes it tingle. If you have had this mustard before you know what I’m taking about. If you have never had this before the spice on this mustard is not like Tabasco. It’s basically ground dry mustard with water added. Very unique heat and I recommend you ask for it and place it sparingly on your egg roll. To tone the heat down, you can add some duck sauce from one of those plastic packages. It comes in a little plastic to-go ramekin.

Verdict

Damn good…especially for a buck 75! Best egg roll in Broward County. It’s even better than the Mai-Kai because it’s bigger and way cheaper. 4 Beers!
Remember to stop by Wong’s and tell them Dan I Cook sent you! Stay Hungry!

Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing.)
