Triple Decker Sandwich

BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse….Enjoyable Lunch at a Decent Price.

Since BJ’s opened, I probably have been there over a dozen times. I had high hopes for this joint because of all the beer selections and their Chicago style deep dish pizza. Each time I went, there was either an issue with the food or service. It seemed like they couldn’t get the two components to gel properly.

When I went for lunch on 07/26/17 with my wife, I decided before I walked in that I would do a review even if the place sucked. Thru the doors we went and the hostess promptly greeted us. We walked up and sat at the bar. First thing you notice is how huge this place is….High ceilings, long bar, three dining areas with outdoor seating, too. Dark woods with a huge mural painted on the wall gives this space some warmth. This is definitely a 21st century version of a German/American Beer Haus. We were there about 2:00pm and it wasn’t very busy.

Big Print Menu

Big Print Menu

We get our menu and it’s literally a book. They have so many selections of food and drinks it’s mind boggling. When I opened the menu the words were in small print and I couldn’t read it without my glasses. I can usually read menus without glasses but this $hit was tiny. I’m sure if the menu was in a regular font it would be 30 pages thick, LOL. Since I didn’t have my glasses I looked up their menu online and was reading it off my phone, but doing it this way was very time consuming. Our server came over a couple times to politely asked if we were ready to order. When she came the second time I told her I couldn’t read the menu because I forgot my glasses. With in seconds she comes back with another menu in LARGE print. First I was like…”Damn, I’m old!” and then I realized what a great idea it was! This menu didn’t have pictures like the other one but I didn’t care…Reading this menu was a breeze.

Wedge Salad

Wedge Salad

I ordered the lunch special of a half Triple Decker Sandwich (no mayo) with fries and, for a few extra bucks, I added a Wedge Salad. My wife got the California Club with no avocados and fries. For my drink….are you ready for this folks…I got a Root-beer made by BJ’s! Anyone who follows me knows I love my Miller Lite but I really wasn’t in the mood to have beer. I sampled a few and ended up ordering one coconut tasting beer, but I didn’t even finish it.

Draft Beer Heaven

Draft Beer Heaven

*** For the record this restaurant has a large selection of draft beers. It’s a good mix of their own beers (not made on premise) and other well known and local craft breweries. Their Lightswitch Lager is my favorite. It is very comparable to Bud Light and Miller Lite but with more flavor. Its probably because they use malt and not rice or corn when brewing the beer. On beer alone, they would easily rate 4 Beers from me.***

My salad comes out and it’s a decent size for the price and looked outstanding. I’m old school…I love iceberg lettuce and getting it cut in a wedge with bacon, blue cheese crumbles, tomatoes and blue cheese dressing…Its a thing of beauty! There was no bruising to the lettuce so it was cut fresh and it was properly chilled. Good stuff.

 California club sandwich

California club sandwich

Our sandwiches come out and it was a good portion. This Triple Decker has roast beef, turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato. It says it has an Italian dressing on it, too, but I didn’t taste it. I got a side of ranch dressing which I poured on top of the roast beef. After squishing the sandwich down a bit, I took a bite. Mind you, I have a big mouth and I could barley get my mouth around this bad boy. I thought this sandwich would be constructed more like a club sandwich, but it was basically a sub with the warm bread being cut in half. Overall, the sandwich was very tasty. From what I was told it’s only served during lunch. Now, the fries I wasn’t a fan of. They had a taste of being reheated or being under a heat lamp for too long. My wife disagreed with me and she loved them. She reminded me that she is a fry connoisseur because she eats them all the time. I know she eats fries all the time so I respect her opinion. Still these fries remind me of the frozen stuff you heat up from the supermarket. For the record my wife really enjoyed her sandwich, too.

This place is HUGE!

The Verdict

The service was friendly, prompt, and efficient. The restaurant is beautiful and very clean. The music that was piped in ( yes, I pay attention to that $hit too:) was damn good. Heard some REM and 10,000 Maniacs…. nice mix. The food was pretty damn good, too. Overall, on this particular day, I’ll give them 3 Beers for now. I’ll upgrade to 4 if I return to order a deep dish pizza and they hit a home run with it. Remember to tell them Dan I Cook sent you and Stay Hungry!

Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing.)
